Development of ChatWorks has ended. ChatWorks will remain available as freeware.
What is ChatWorks? ChatWorks is going to be a combination
IRC, IM, and SMS chat client. It's foundation will be a rewrite of my
ptpChat IRC client. I will utilize an IM-IRC gateway called BitlBee to
incorporate IM connectivity. Because BitlBee is free, it will be easy
for users to basically host their own IM gateway (or they can use
mine). There will be no subscription fee to use it, only a one time
cost of $19.99 to own it. Should BoraWare cease to exist one day
ChatWorks will still operate *completely* on one of the hand-fulls of
public BitlBee servers. So here is the breakdown:
IRC:
- Connect to up to three servers at a time (Complete)
- Keep your connection in the "background" (Complete)
- Use either a desktop-like, tabbed, interface; or a simple one
- Keep logs (either on VFS or in RAM)
- Operate like any standard IRC client (Complete)
IM
- Connect to unlimited (within reason of course) IM servers (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, Jabber [/w MUC], and Google) (Complete)
- Connect to more than one type of IM server (ie two yahoo accounts, three aim, etc) (Complete)
- Keep your connection in the "background" (Complete)
- Host your own IM gateway if you choose (Complete)
- Use a lot of the popular features (typing notifications, away status, etc)
SMS
- Keep logs of your text messages
- Automatically break long messages in to multiple small ones
All of the above:
- See messages of any type all in the same tab strip (Complete)
- Navigate completely stylus-free with the 5-way (Complete)
- Select from *many* alert options (vibrate, beep, mp3 at some point)(Complete [limited])
- Enjoy a very clean interface (Complete)
- Enjoy free upgrades for life (Complete)
